The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) says it will be hosting a number of activities throughout the month in honour of the late President Dr Cheddi Jagan on this the 11th anniversary of his death.
In a press release the PPP said this year’s observances will be held under the theme ‘Cheddi Jagan’s Vision, Our Living Guide’. It said Jagan was a principal figure in the anti-colonial movement and, after Independence; he fought to restore democracy to Guyana.
In keeping with this, PPP groups nationwide including the Women’s Progressive Organisation and the Progressive Youth Organisation will host activities that reflect “Dr Jagan’s relentless struggle and unwavering contribution to the development of Guyana.” Overseas-based groups have also planned a number of activities.
The roster of activities will start with the Annual Tribute and Wreath-laying Ceremony on Sunday at the Babu John Crematorium, Port Mourant, Corentyne, East Berbice. President Bharrat Jagdeo, Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, former President Janet Jagan and PPP General Secretary Donald Ramotar are expected to make presentations at this event. A number of cultural performances have also been planned.
According to the release observances will continue on March 6 with a ‘Night of Reflection’ at Freedom House at 5 pm; a ‘Cheddi Jagan Fitness Walk’ on March 16 at the National Park, at 7 am followed by a ‘Family Fun Day’ at 2 pm at State House. On March 27 the ‘Cheddi Jagan Annual Lecture’ will be hosted at the Red House at 5 pm. The winners of the Cheddi Jagan Essay Competition will be given their prizes at the lecture. Other activities include a safari which ends at Karasabai, cycle races at Essequibo and Berbice and a photo exhibition. The PPP said its party leaders are expected to officiate at these events.
Jagan died on March 6, 1997.
