Dear Editor,
In order to prevent crimes committed in communities, the government has decided to form and reinforce policing groups. Community Policing Groups are formed to support the police in the fight against crime, since the police alone cannot do the work, mainly because of manpower.
Many of these Community Policing groups do not last due to poor leadership and cooperation.
Talking about leaders in community policing, we need people like Terrence Shepherd of Ruimveldt, Rudolph Singh of Good Hope, Edgar McAlmont of Linden, Tajpaul Gainda of Industry/Cummings Lodge, Parmanand Sukhu of Better Hope/Vryheid’s Lust, Krishna Sewall of Bath Settlement/Bush Lot Village; Mahesh Arjune of Martyr’s Ville/Mon Repos, CN Sharma of Georgetown, and Ramdass of Corentyne, Berbice. These are leaders with knowledge in Community Policing (practical and theory) and they lead from the front.
We also need a vibrant National Coordinator for community policing, and I recommend Supt David Ramnarine or former commissioner of police, Laurie Lewis.
Yours faithfully,
Mohamed S Khan
