Dear Editor,
I note with excitement the letter written by no less a person than Vishnu Bisram praising the rapid strides made by Lee Kwan Yew in Singapore.
He made reference to a minister of this government who did not pay heed to his argument that Singapore could be a good model for Guyana.
Because of a lack of vision, he noted, our country (Guyana) languishes today unable to achieve its full potential.
I happened to share a conversation with an old friend who knows a thing or two about Singapore. He noted that with all of Lee Kwan Yew’s imperfections he gave people outside of his group the chance to develop in their areas. This brings me to the city of which I am now a part – the tragedy is that government ministers have refused to allow a morally clean and competent mayor to develop and bring this city up to date.
The many examples are well known. Even when, as I discovered since taking this job, overseas investors wish to bring progress, money and jobs to the city, the Council is frustrated.
The Minister now seems to support the administration which is not in line with the Mayor and Councillors – the most recent example I learnt was that the Mayor initiated discussion to have a crematorium established, only to be frustrated by the bureaucracy, and of course the Minister is not talking to the Mayor.
How serious are we to get near to Singapore.
Yours faithfully,
John Green
Personal Assistant to the Mayor
