“I am confident about the training the boxers went through and I know that they are well prepared which leaves me upbeat about Guyana’s chances at the Olympic Box-Offs in Trinidad and Tobago next week.”
So said Clifton Moore at the handing over of the travel tickets given to Guyana’s five-man boxing team.
Moore, who will perform the duties of manager/coach, also informed the small gathering which included president of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) Affeeze Khan and Area Manager of Caribbean Airlines Carlton DeFour, that the boxers would make it to the Olympics later this year.
“I am confident about this team. They have been working assiduously for the Box-Offs and I am very optimistic that they will make it to Beijing for the Olympics later this year,” he said.
Khan also thanked Caribbean Airlines for its sterling contribution to his association.
“Every time we approach Caribbean Airlines, they are always willing to assist us in whatever way they can and I must express my heartfelt gratitude to them once again,” Khan stated.
In reply, DeFour congratulated the boxers who were chosen and urged them to do their best not only for themselves, but for their country.
“Going to the Olympics is a big opportunity for you. You have been selected because of your commitment to training and I want to extend my congratulations to you and implore of you to do your best. I must also state that Caribbean Airlines will always be here for you and once you qualify, we will be here for you as you take the next step to the Olympics.”
Those selected to represent Guyana at the Box-Offs are: Essequibian Aubrey Moore (lightweight), Dellon Allicock (jnr. flyweight), Ray Sandiford (featherweight), Dennis Thomas (welterweight) and overseas-based Quantis Greaves (heavyweight). Terrence Poole and Moore are the coaches.
