The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) says the Number 56 village Water Treatment Plant has been completed.
According to a press release the facility was handed over to GWI on Monday. It is expected to benefit 15,000 people from Numbers 71 to 73 villages. The plant has the capacity to distribute 3.8 million litres of water daily. GWI said its primary treatment mechanism is a slow sand filtration system.
The project was financed with a $1.1 billion grant from the Japanese government. The contract was signed on January 12, 2007 between GWI and the Kitano Construction Corporation to build two water treatment plants. It also funded the rehabilitation of the Number 57 Village bore hole and the procurement of the 8,400 water meters. The second phase of the project is scheduled to be completed by March 2010. It is expected to benefit another 18,000 people.
Prime Minister Samuel Hinds is expected to officiate at the commissioning ceremony set for Sunday at 10 am.
