A 23-year-old man was placed on $60,000 bail when he appeared on a charge of simple larceny before Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Wendell Maynard of East La Penitence was charged with stealing one black Hoajue motor scooter valued $210,000, belonging to police officer Lorraine Saul, from under her house in the Joint Services Scheme. Maynard pleaded not guilty to the charge.
He told the court that his friend Sherwin Allen who is known to the police as Idingo McKenzie was the one who stole the bike and showed it to him. Allen, who was also in court, denied that he knows Maynard and stated that he saw him for the first time in prison.
Maynard said that he and Allen were “smoking a joint” on Monday and he was going to buy another when the police picked him up.
The officers asked him about the bike and he took them to Allen. They were both arrested but only Maynard was charged while Allen said it was a case of mistaken identity as he was not Idingo Mckenzie.
Police prosecutor Sherwin Mathews said that Maynard was found riding the bike and when arrested he implicated Allen saying he knew him as Idingo McKenzie.
The matter was transferred to Court Two and will continue on March 17.
