Dear Editor,
I read recently about the awarding of guard contracts for government sites to Strategic Action Security Service and R.K. Security which were previously held by United Associates Security and Domestic Services (UAS&DS).
When UAS&DS started in November 2000 it was one of the highlights of government which then boasted of the relationships and cooperation between government and the two trade unions which took over guard contracts for government sites throughout the country. It bore the fruits that were expected e.g. the privatization of public service watchmen. Inspite of all that was said about that new company it is worth nothing the courage exhibited by the two unions in being part of a solution. From all accounts it worked well with both government and the company until now, though there was criticism in Stabroek Business of its operations.
I recall in 2005 sites in Regions Three and Four were reallocated to Mr Kanhai of Strategic Action Security Service and in 2008 he is again the beneficiary of contracts in Regions 2,3,4,5, and 6, the largest in Guyana. Regions 1,7,8,9 and 10 have been allocated to RK Security.
What has happened to UAS&DS Inc? Are they not worthy of consideration as the pioneers of this privatization deal? Were they ever questioned about their capacity or qualification to provide the service that they started out giving? Has the security to the regions gotten worse over the period 2000 – 2007 or perhaps it is because Mr Seelo Baichan is not with the company due to his passing?
I believe the company has been very badly treated after all it had done.
Yours faithfully,
Errol T. Bobb
