Carlwym Collins, Janella Jonas, Ricardo Martin and Alika Morgan have been short-listed by the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) to participate in the 2008 Junior Carifta Games which are scheduled to take place on March 22-24 in St Kitts Nevis.
Of the four athletes short-listed, three of them are in the under 17 category and will be making their debuts at the championships once selected by the AAG.
Those three athletes are Ricardo Martin, Janella Jonas and Carlwyn Collins.
Seasoned distance runner Alika Morgan will be making her third appearance in four years at the 2008 Junior Carifta Games.
Although Morgan has been short-listed to represent Guyana in the girls U-20 3000m and 1500m, her coach Leslie Black told Stabroek Sport earlier this year that Morgan intends to participate in the 800m.
Also coached by Leslie Blacks, Janelle Jonas has been short-listed to participate in the 800m and 1500m after commandingly winning both of those events at the Guyana Teachers’ Union Schools National Championships and at the recently held Carifta trials.
Martin has been selected for possible participation in the 800m and 1500m U-17 events in which he has staged major upsets at the end of the last track season.
Queen’s College student Carlwyn Collins caught the eyes of selectors for the brilliance that he has recently shown in the 200m and 400m. Collins holds a personal best of 22.7s in the 200m and 52.5 in the 400m
According to President of the AAG Claude Blackmore: “The athletes who have been short-listed are the best possible candidates to represent the country at this year’s Carifta Games based on their times and recent performance.”
Blackmore also said that the short-listed athletes would be participating as long as the AAG or athletes themselves raised the funds required for their participation.
