Anthony Downes completed an outstanding victory in the semifinals of the Banks DIH Plus Energy Open tennis tournament when he defeated Ezra Sue-Ho on Saturday to advance to the finals of the men’s open singles at Le Meridien Lawn tennis courts.
This dramatic three-set encounter illustrated the changing of the guard as former junior sensation Ezra Sue-Ho was taught a thing or two by the Guyana Lawn Tennis Association’s current top junior player Downes.
In this exciting match full of high quality tennis strokes, Downes captured a close first set 7-5 using his height and strength to pelt winners out of Sue-Ho’s reach.
Sue-Ho eventually battled back in the second set and gained a commanding 6-1 to win the match at one set a piece.
In the final set, however, Downes’s consistency rose tremendously and helped him to regain momentum and take his place in the finals after winning the set 6-3 by playing controlled and patient tennis.
After suffering an agonizing loss in the semifinals of the men’s 45 singles, Rudy Grant emphatically took revenge on Stephen David-Longe in two sets 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals of the men’s singles 35.
