Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle yesterday remanded two men facing separate charges of carnal knowledge when they appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Jerome Mathews, a 35-year-old teacher at a Georgetown school was charged with unlawfully and carnally having knowledge of a girl under the age of 15. The offence allegedly occurred between January 21 and February 14, 2008.
Meanwhile another man was charged with having carnal knowledge of his 13-year-old daughter on March 5. Neither of the men was required to plead.
Prosecutor Denise Griffith objected to bail for Matthews on the grounds that he was tasked with the responsibility to protect the child, which he flouted. He was ordered to appear at court on Tuesday.
In the second case, the court heard that the 40-year-old father and his wife were separated at the time of the offence and the child was staying with her father. The child allegedly called her mother and told her that her father was molesting her. The child’s mother, who was present at court, said the girl is currently undergoing counselling. The man was ordered to appear at Court Five on Wednesday.
