The High Court trial of Shonette Dubisette on the charge that she killed her boyfriend nearly six years ago during a domestic spat, came to an emotional end yesterday when a jury unanimously found her not guilty of manslaughter.
Dubisette was indicted before Justice Claudette La Bennett for the murder of University of Guyana student, Michael McBean, on August 19, 2002. The two had been a couple for years prior to the incident, which occurred at McBean’s home.
Dubisette whose trial was prolonged in excess of a month broke into tears after the verdict was read. During the trial Dubisette admitted to stabbing McBean during a misunderstanding on the day in question but said it was an act of self-defence.
The young woman, who was 22 years old at the time of the incident, also spoke of a history of physical abuse at the hands of McBean. He was 21 years old.
Dubisette and McBean were both at the University of Guyana pursing studies at the time of the incident. After the misunderstanding on August 19, 2002, Dubisette had rushed him to the hospital where he later succumbed.
State Counsel Kara Duff presented the prosecution’s case while attorney-at-law, Vic Puran, represented Dubisette.
