A farewell ceremony was held on Wednesday for two Cuban doctors who completed their attachments at the Enterprise Health Centre under a government of Guyana/Cuba health care initiative.
A press release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) said Minister within the Ministry of Health Dr Bheri Ramsaran joined residents to bid farewell to Dr Elizabeth Cruz and Dr Kareena Degorie.
The doctors were on attachment programmes under the joint government programme that will see the construction of three diagnostic centres at Diamond, Leonora and Suddie. Health centres are also being built at Lusignan, Enterprise, Rosignol, Canal Number One, Parika and the Dr CC Nicholson Hospital at Nabaclis which benefited from substantive resident doctors and medex.
The ties between the two countries were strengthened during President Bharrat Jagdeo’s visit to the island-nation in 2006 and the cooperation agreement expanded.
GINA quoted Ramsaran as saying that within the next five years more than 500 Guyanese doctors will be trained in Cuba and take over the operations of the centres. The minister also said he was grateful to the Cuban doctors for their support during the period. The ceremony was held at the Enterprise Community Centre on Wednesday.
