Guyana’s leading rifle shooters have stepped up preparations for two important events next month which are expected to test the ability of the Caribbean’s short range shooting champions.
The Guyana National Rifle Association (GNRA) will run off a Record Shoot today at the Timehri Rifle Ranges starting at 10:00 hours.
Ransford Goodluck, Guyana’s top rifleman will be going all out to make it two in a row following his success in last Sunday’s Record Shoot.
Today’s shoot will be held over the 300, 500 and 1000 yards ranges. Goodluck is expected to face stiff opposition from fullbore captain Mahendra Persaud, the in-form Ryan Sampson, Dylan Fields, Claude Duguid, Dane Blair, Paul Slowe, Terry Stuart, Richard “Dickie” Fields, Colin Loncke and Charles Dean.
The local shooters are preparing for the visit to Guyana of the London Middlesex Rifle Association team and the Caribbean Rifle Shooting championships both scheduled for next month.
Secretary of the (GNRA) Sampson disclosed that team the London Middlesex Rifle Association of the United Kingdom will be in Guyana from April 18 to 20 on the first leg of a Caribbean tour.
Sampson said the team will be captained by Richard Winney and will include several experienced shooters.
The Englishmen will also join regional shooters at the Caribbean championships set for April 28th to May 4th in Kingston, Jamaica.
Guyana will be defending the short range title and will be looking the redeem themselves in the long range competition after they narrowly went down to Trinidad and Tobago at last year’s tournament staged here at the Timehri Rifle range.
Last Sunday’s Record Shoot proved a test for the local shooters with switching winds.
Goodluck was the top shooter for the day and completed a possible at each range tallying the maximum 105 pts with 13V.
Persaud followed with 102.9 having shot a possible at the 600 yard and dropping one point at the 300 yard. Blair was third with a score of 100 and 9Vs with a possible at the 600 yard and dropping one point at the 900 yard range.
