Lugard Mohan of the Georgetown Masters proved that he was indeed a basketball master when he produced an effective 24-point performance to lead his team to a 100-84 victory against the Georgetown Pioneers in the Bryden’s Second Division Basketball League held at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Saturday evening.
The Masters became the first team to reach triple figures in the league with Mohan, himself scoring the 100th point with a baseline lay-up with 27.7 seconds remaining in regulation time to complete their 16-point victory against the GT Pioneers.
The Masters’ offence was lethal from the `get go’ as they were able to combine the high percentage perimeter shooting of Mohan and Aubrey ‘Jakie’ Young with the dominance in the low post from forwards Kelvin Simon and Dane Kendall.
Mohan took his share early and connected from ‘down-town’ on two consecutive trips down the court to give the Masters their first lead of the game at 8-4.
The Pioneers came back with some fire power of their own later in the first half to match the scoring of the streaky Masters, as they looked to Rayad Overton and ex- national player Robert ‘Bobby’ Cadogan who made good on their first three-point attempts in the first half.
Kendall and Simon created havoc in the low post and put many of the Pioneers in foul trouble early.
After trading baskets for most of the first half, the Masters went on an explosive run to take a seven-point lead and close the half 47-40.
In the second half, however, the earlier fouls committed would eventually come back to haunt the Pioneers and Kendall took full advantage of the defenders who had just one or two more fouls to spare before being fouled out of the game.
Kendall ended with 22 points, the majority of which he scored in the second half.
Overton registered a team high of 13 points while Darren Thomas was able to contribute 13 points also before he fouled out of the game.
In the first game of the evening, the Junior Elite gained their first win of the league when they survived a 65-63 encounter with the Eagles.
Though the Junior Elite players seemed to be in control as they held a few double-digit advantages, the Eagles were able to capitalize on every blunder made by the young and relinquish the lead with quick fast-break points and three-point shooting.
Many of their come-from-behind heroics were spear-headed by the brilliant perimeter shooting of Adrian Hooper who would eventually finish with 23 points.
Hooper scored two consecutive three-pointers during the final three minutes of the game to bring the Eagles within two points of the victors.
Marlon Chesney led the Elites with eight points while Bevon Spooner who recently led his team to the Georgetown conference finals in the Guyana Secondary School Basketball Associa-tion, added 14 points.
Pacesetter guard Travis Burnett also registered nine points in his first game with the Elites.
