East Coast Demerara District managed to successfully defend their title as overall champions on Sunday at the 2008 Linwest Games at the Eve Leary Sports Club ground.
The East Coast District relied on the athletes from President’s College and the rest of the powerhouse schools on the East Coast to combine for an unbeatable team.
East Coast district, registered 713 points to record a commanding victory over second-placed Upper Demerara who finished with 566 points.
West Demerara finished third with 447 points while East Bank Demerara followed with 253 points.
In the women’s category East Coast won with 379.50 while Upper Demerara followed in second place with 300 points.
The third-placed ladies’ team was East Bank Demerara with 143.5 points while West Demerara held the bottom position with 129 points.
The male category was much closer but East Coast district secured the pole position with 334 points while West Demerara followed close behind with 304 points in second place.
Third place was occupied by Upper Demerara with 266 points while East Bank Demerara came in fourth once again with 124 points.
One of the President’s College (PC) athletes who earned vital points for East Coast was Oneidge Anthony. She raced to a superb victory in the girls’ under-13 100m dash which she won in the time of 13.6s.
The other outstanding PC athlete was Otis Chase who clocked a respectable 59.1 seconds in the boys under-15 400m.
East Coast sprinter Chavez Ageday captured the boys’ under-17 100m in 11.4s while his teammate Deja Smarth crossed the line in 13.3s to capture the girls’ under-15 100m.
Though East Coast may have won the majority of the sprints, Tyson Bentick dominated in all of the distance events in the boys’ under- 20 category to give upper Demerara a boost in the points standing. Bentick won the 800m, 1500m and 5000m recording times of 2:14.6s, 4:40s and 19:25.2s.
Upper Demerara’s Parrish Cadogan and Monique Daniels recorded wins for the mining district in the boys and girls’ under-15 long jump.
East Coast’s Shellane Eastman and Trevona Pollard won the girls’ under-17 and girls’ under-20 long jump respectively.
