Some amount of running water was restored to residents of North Better Hope and North Vryheid’s Lust and they continued their cleanup yesterday following the swamping of the area by the spring tides last weekend.
A check in the area yesterday revealed that residents were receiving some amount of water through their taps and some were utilizing pumps to ‘draw’ the water. Residents said that some disinfectant was also distributed in the area yesterday. They had pleaded for this on Sunday when this newspaper spoke with them.
Yesterday the residents said that trucks with water tanks were distributing water in the area also. Additionally, the mud and other debris that was cleared from the drain at the public road and was left on the side of the highway, was being fetched away by trucks.
Montrose, North Vryheid’s Lust and Better Hope were severely affected on Friday morning as spring tides flooded homes in a matter of minutes leaving water as high as two feet and residents complaining of the damage wrought. As they attempted to clean up in the following days, they were stymied by the lack of running water and a thick film of mud had left a foul odour in the area.
