Cabinet has been paying attention to the entry requirements for prospective students to the University Of Guyana, the mandatory resort to external examiners and the use of peer reviews.
Attention is also being focused on the independent review of scripts, academic standards and appointments and the size of the student population and areas of study.
Updating the media on the issues discussed during Cabinet’s meeting on March 18, Head of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS) and Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Roger Luncheon said focus was on the issues at UG. He said that Cabinet examined the reports of the public consultations on Guyana and also reports from its own sub-committees that have been addressing a strategy for the institution of higher learning.
According to GINA, Minister Baksh highlighted the seriousness of the situation at UG and noted the high quality of responses received during the consultations and from Cabinet’s sub-committee.
Meanwhile, Luncheon pointed out that the administration’s immediate attention was focused on priority issues such as enhancing the management and administration of the institution, improving the role of academics and their performances and addressing issues surrounding the institution’s physical environment.
He said also that Cabinet has urged the Minister of Education to conclude the review of the institution, involve external institutions, particularly the University of the West Indies, in charting the way forward and to present a comprehensive submission that will address the concerns of the administration.
