Dear Editor,
Over the past six months we the residents of the block ‘Y’ South East Cummings Lodge have not received water bills. I am now hearing the CEO Mr. Karran Singh saying that GWI is on a nationwide disconnection campaign.
In the month of October I went and queried a bill that was sent to me for some six thousand dollars.
The supervisor after checking on my queries told me that we only have to pay for three months. I then ask her how many persons had come to query.
She told me only three of us. I asked her if the three of us have decided to pay how we would be excluded if GWI decided to disconnect the water. She said that she would have to come and sensitize the remaining members of the community.
I implored her to come and form a water committee so that we all can be fully updated on a regular basis. This idea I am afraid has not yet been implemented after my last appeal about one month ago.
I am asking for this committee because the community that has about five hundred residents is relatively new. I am of the opinion also that it is unfair for all of us to obtain water for such a long period free of cost.
As long as the water can be obtained freely hardly anyone would make any effort to check for bills etc. I can recall in the middle part of last year we were out of water for two months. No one showed any interest to check with GWI. I was embarrassed to check because I only paid for about three months since I took up residence here.
However when I checked the main was broken and the water was escaping in a drain. In a frantic effort many broke the mains to eject the last drops. I have seen a resident making a hole at the bottom of the main totally disregarding the bore and saddle he received from GWI.
I am once again making a sincere appeal to GWI to come and sensitize the residents of this new community and form a committee that can give regular updates to the water entity.
Yours faithfully,
Tajpaul Gainda
