The security agenda must be pursued vigorously

Dear Editor,

It is time for the civil, religious, political societies and the media to publicly and aggressively pursue the following initial steps:

1) Implementation of the agreed agenda at the last Security Forum as soon as possible

2) Establishment of adequately and independently staffed offices for an Inspector General to oversee the proper functioning of government offices, an Ombudsman to address citizens’ concerns and an office to monitor and investigate professional misconduct of all public servants, including politicians and security personnel.

3) Strong legislation and aggressive pursuit of people involved in the destruction, selling or buying of vandalized public property, projects or utilities.

4) A much more vigorous and immediate programme to match public and private investment with willing Guyanese to take advantage of the worldwide need for agricultural products, meat and fish.

5) A greater push to enlist business and the public in reducing oil consumption by giving tax incentives for hybrid cars and alternative and energy saving innovations in new buildings and projects in Guyana.

6) Temporary incentive pay to attract or keep desperately needed skilled people for development needs.

7) A stronger legal oversight to monitor police actions and investigations and their resulting findings within a reasonable time.

Yours faithfully,
