A 48-year-old farmer accused of murdering a 42-year-old labourer during a fight was remanded to prison when he appeared at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Surattan Buckan called ‘Sixteen’ of Bonasika Creek, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) was not required to plead to the capital offence of murder and was remanded to prison by Magistrate Fazil Azeez.
It is alleged that last Saturday at Bonasika Creek, EBE, he murdered Mohanram Seeram. Reports are that the men had been drinking when a misunderstanding arose, which developed into a fight. Seeram reportedly had a bottle and attacked Buckan with it but was relieved of the bottle by the accused, who allegedly broke it and during the fight reportedly stabbed the deceased in the neck causing his death.
The matter was reported to the police and following investigations, Buckan was charged.
Attorney-at-law Pamela De Santos entered an appearance for Buckan. In her submissions she stated that the accused was mentally ill and also suffered from seizures and asked for him to be remanded to a mental hospital. Buckan was remanded to prison.
He will return to court on May 6 at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.
