Alkins impressive as Essequibo takes first day honours
In what can be considered a rare occurrence, Essequibo’s Under-19 cricketers totally outplayed their counterparts from Demerara on the first day of the Guyana and Trinidad Mutual Fire and Life Insurance Company sponsored tournament at the Everest Cricket Club ground yesterday.
After winning the toss and electing to take first strike the Essequibo team were dismissed for 159 in their first innings.
Royston Alkins topscored with 33 while Delon Heyliger scored 31 and skipper Royan Fredericks 30.
National Under-19 fast bowler Leon Scott was the most outstanding bowler for Demerara with 5-38 from 10.2 overs.
“It was a very flat pitch and I just had to put the ball in the right areas and that did it for me,” said the 17-year-old Scott a former national U-15 player.
He received support from Rajendra Ramkellawan who bagged 2-20, Totaram Bishun, 2-37 and Keon Lake 1-33.
Demerara were off to a solid start reaching 28-0 at tea.
However, the team crashed to 82 all out losing all 10 of their wickets for the addition of only 54 runs.
Alkins was the main destroyer grabbing 5-12 from 11 overs while Fredericks chipped in with 3-3.
There was a wicket each for Rovindra Parsram 1-9 and Triston Messena 1-18.
Essequibo in reply reached four without loss in the 17 minutes of play possible.
The two teams were met by president of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) and a representative from the sponsors before the start of play yesterday.
Play continues today from 10am. (KB)
