Essequibo seals historic win
Essequibo defeated Demerara on the second day of their scheduled three-day encounter yesterday at the Everest Cricket Club ground,to secure their first victory in a three-day game; posting 159 in their first innings then bowling Demerara out for 82 leading by77 runs.
Brilliant captaincy from Denver Greaves restricted Essequibo to 61 all out on the second day leaving them just 139 to win.
Fredricks was the first to go when he was bowled by Leon Scott for seven . Rovindra Parasram top scored with 15 as no other Essequibo batsman got into double figures.
Mark Austin, Royston Alkins, Terrence Tulsieram and Delon Heliger were removed in the space of three runs as Essequibo toppled to 45 – 6.
The final three batsmen fell before the lunch interval to Totaram Bishun and Keon Lake as they finished with figures of 5 – 11 and 3 – 17 respectively. With a target of 139 set for victory, the defending champions began their second innings ten minutes before the lunch break and were six without loss (6 – 0). Jeetendra Sookhdeo and Ryan Rajmangal got to a 66- run partnership before Sookhdeo was caught by Tulsieram off the bowling of Fredricks for 36 which included four boundaries.
Trevon Griffith was removed at 79 – 3 for no score and Dellon Fernandes (01) and Ryan Rajmangal (24) fell within the space of two runs taking them to tea at 86 for 4.
The successful bowlers then were Rovindra Parasram and Royston Alkins with two wickets apiece.
Troy Nurse and Rajendra Ramkhellawan put on a 25-run partnership after lunch taking them to 111 before Ramkhellawan was caught behind for 13.
Denver Greaves was run out for four (4), then Troy Nurse (24) was bowled with 20 runs needed for victory.
Bishun (01) and Keon Lake (08) were both removed on 125 leaving Leon Scott and Seon Daniels at the crease to try and make the final 15 runs.
The Essequibo team was patient as they finally took the last wicket; Scott, Leg before Wicket for three recording their first victory in a three-day game in a GTM tournament.
Rovindra Parasram spearheaded the attack taking 6 – 24 and Royston Alkins again was effective with 3 – 38.
