-charges to be laid
Police have discovered that the reported kidnapping of a 19-year-old female student of the University of Guyana was faked, a police press release stated yesterday.
The kidnap “victim” is suspected of collusion with a male friend in order to fleece money from her mother who resides overseas.
On Monday night the uncle of the “kidnap victim” reported to the police at Cove and John Police Station that he had received information from his sister overseas that her daughter had contacted her and told her that she had been kidnapped by two men in a white car along the Railway Embankment while on her way to the University. The young woman, the uncle said, told her mother she was being held captive in a house and the men were demanding $300,000 failing which they would kill her.
The matter was subsequently pursued and as a result the male friend of the victim along with his mother and sister were taken into custody and the alleged kidnap victim was found later that night.
The young woman subsequently turned up at the Brickdam Police Station and reported that she had been kidnapped and raped by two men. Charges will be laid shortly in this matter, the police said.
