Dear Editor,
The recent altercation between the Speaker of the National Assembly and the Finance Minister is very interesting in our young democracy.
There have been previous incidents where Members of Parliament and the Speaker had shared differing opinions on the interpretation of the standing orders. What is different in this case is that both the Speaker and the Member (Minister of Finance) are from the same party.
This is evidence of democracy at work in our Parliamentary system. This was a case of persons within the same party sharing differing views without fear and with conviction.
At no time was either gentleman disrespectful to each other or the house. This is a healthy sign for a thriving democracy.
Yours faithfully,
Albert Jacobs
