The Georgetown Reading and Research Centre on Wednesday launched ‘The Book Feast of 2008’ in another bid to promote literacy and community involvement in education in Guyana.
Director Rupert Hopkinson urged the media to support the call by promoting the message that “reading forms the foundation for school-based learning and those who read will be better able to contribute to the growth of the nation.” The sale will be held for three months.
The Centre is also cutting to half price the sale of all books and membership fees. As an added bonus schools and churches; will be given a 65% discount.
At the launching ceremony the centre donated $250,000 worth of books to the School of Education and Humanities at the University of Guyana. Hopkinson said the books were donated to this faculty because of its size and because it comprised divisions directly and otherwise involved in education. “It is one of the best mediums for promoting literacy in Guyana,” he said.
The Centre will be open from Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm. There are approximately 100,000 books to be sold and given away. The “Book Feast” ends on June 30.
