Several community centre grounds on the East Coast Demerara were recently assessed to determine their suitability to host some of the cultural features at CARIFESTA X, which begins on August 22.
The Government Information Agency (GINA) reported that the venues included community centre grounds at La Bonne Intention, Lusignan, Buxton, Enmore and Victoria and the Bladen Hall Multilateral school ground.
Region Four is among six regions in Guyana, which has been earmarked to host the range of activities for CARIFESTA X, including the performing, culinary, visual and literary arts symposia and a grand market fashion focus.
Regions Two, Three, Five, Six and Ten are the other regions earmarked for the event, which will be held in Guyana from August 22 to 31 under the theme “One Caribbean, One Purpose, Our Life, Our Culture”.
Members of the assessment team last Friday were Coordinator of the CARIFESTA X Secretariat Lyndon Ross, representatives of the local performing arts committee, the Caricom Secretariat and the Guyana Fire Service (GFS).
Meanwhile, a recent inspection was conducted at similar venues at Cornelia Ida, Uitvlugt, Goed Fortuin and the Joe Vieira Park on the West Bank Demerara by the same team. During the visit, stakeholders were also briefed about the ongoing preparations by Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr Frank Anthony.
The team is expected to visit Mahaica to continue the awareness campaign and seek individuals with potential who can contribute to the festival.
CARIFESTA X will open at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence on August 22, but several other venues in Georgetown and its environs will host different aspects of the events.
These include the Sophia Exhibition Centre, the National Library, Umana Yana, the Walter Roth and African Heritage Museums and Main Street Avenue in Georgetown.
