Thirty-seven recruits at the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) on Thursday completed a development training programme in keeping with the agency’s quest to boost its capabilities and efficiency.
According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release Chief Fire Officer Lawrence David, after conducting the inspections at the ‘passing out parade’, said improved human capacity is crucial in fire fighting. “We have to constantly prepare all sections of its (GFS) operations especially the human resource component if it is to meet the high standard required,” he said. The fire chief also said that recruit training will complement on-the-job-training which is now being tailored to address the new demands expected from professional fire service officers.
The four-month training session included both theoretical and practical areas such as fire service standards, drill commands, fire codes and fire prevention investigations.
According to GINA the training was in keeping with government’s plan to enhance the service the GFS provides by granting approval for fire officers to undergo training overseas. In this year’s budget $8.5M has been allocated to the agency for training and scholarships. The GFS is also expected to benefit from auxiliary unit comprising trained members to assist in fire-fighting efforts.
