A 71-year-old woman accused of killing her 45-year-old reputed husband was remanded to prison on a murder charge when she appeared at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Jahora Ramnauth called ‘Zaimool’ of Zeeburg, West Coast Demerara was not required to plead to the capital offence of murder and was remanded to prison by Magistrate Fazil Azeez.
It is alleged that on April Fool’s Day at Zeeburg, she murdered Subaschand called ‘Bruk up’. Reports are that on the said day, the couple had been drinking and later in the evening began to row. During the row, Subaschand was severely beaten. He was taken to the Leonora Diagnostic Centre, then transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he died later that night. A post-mortem examination found that the Subaschand died of brain haemorrhage. He also suffered a broken jaw and a fractured arm and shoulder. Ramnauth, who neighbours said regularly beat Subaschand, with whom, she had been living for a year, was arrested and charged.
Ramnauth will return to court on May 9 at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court.
