Dear Editor,
Some friends of mine and I have discussed the crime situation. We have concluded that the police cannot cope with the amount of crime per day. We need more policemen and more technically qualified policemen in certain areas of the force. We also need to have more educated policemen.
You cannot have 750,000 people in a country and only 3,000 policemen.
The government must encourage people to become members of the police force by offering them a fair salary along with medical benefits to encourage them to remain in the force.
To train one policeman properly costs thousands of dollars. In some cases, they only last for two years and then ask for their discharge. Who loses? The government.
The politicians must allow the police to do their jobs effectively. The police should resign at age 60 and not 55. Their NIS and gratuity should be provided at the same time.
Having two helicopters will assist in fighting crime if we use them effectively to patrol. Criminals are all over this country, of all ethnicities and operate in different areas of crime.
Yours faithfully,
Michael Hope
