In order to monitor and manage infrastructural projects the Ministry of Public Works and Communication has implemented a daily reporting system for works being done countrywide.
A daily reporting system is in place for updates on the details and progress of works and issues pertaining to all road and bridge projects being conducted by the ministry’s executing arm, the Force Accounts Unit, a press release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) said. The reports are based on daily inspection by the ministry’s engineers and are presented to Minister of Transport and Hydraulics Robeson Benn.
GINA said the same format is being applied to sea and river defence works the ministry is conducting while it is considering implementing the system for contracted projects. The use of radio communication by engineers overseeing contracted works and the ministry’s personnel is being explored in this regard.
According to GINA in November 2006 Benn outlined a comprehensive programme to improve monitoring and management of the ministry’s works. The programme entailed developing a database in a manual format initially with an outline of prearranged schedules for inspection and appropriate mechanisms for reporting. It also included a centre for inputting data and a system that would document the identified areas of focus, the cost and timeframe. It was said that this would also assist in determining the availability of resources and whether the work needed to be done was beyond the scope of the ministry’s personnel.
