Two women were remanded on a charge of abduction when they appeared before Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Brenda Armstrong, 55, of 647 Woodpecker Street, South Ruimveldt Gardens was charged with the abduction of a 13–year-old girl with the intention of secretly holding her against her will, while Claudette Dailey, 54, of the same address was charged for knowingly and willingly assisting Armstrong to commit the said act. Both women pleaded not guilty.
According to police prosecutor Denise Griffith, investigations are ongoing and police are following information that the number one accused Armstrong has been following the girl around for a while now.
The child was allegedly abducted by Armstrong on February 13 and kept for almost 20 days. The girl was taken by the pair to Linden, Buxton and Nabaclis.
Attorney-at-law Kim Kyte-John representing Dailey applied for bail saying that Section 4 of the Kidnapping Act under which her client was charged allows bail. This was reiterated by attorney-at–law Adrian Thompson who represented Armstrong. He also said that both accused were given station bail and were in court yesterday on their own accord, testament to the fact that they will come to court for their trial.
The prosecution objected to bail on the grounds of the seriousness of the matter and that there is a likelihood the defendants would interfere with the young girl if let out on bail.
The magistrate ruled in favour of the prosecution and the matter is to continue in Court Six on April 15.
