The Guyana Football Federation World Cup Committee (GFF-WCC) has approached the Guyana Football Federation with a proposal for the development of women’s football in Guyana.
The proposal by the GFF-WCC has the main goal of developing a women’s team to represent the country at the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) Women’s Gold Tournament in either 2009 or 2010, according to a press release yesterday.
The GFF-WCC is currently advising the national football fraternity to embark on this venture, since they have recently learned of the notable number of Guyanese or children of Guyanese who are playing in the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) and for top clubs throughout North America.
The GFF-WCC is believed to have proposed that those foreign players may stimulate local interest in the development of the programme in Guyana.
The release said that it is the committee’s view that in order for a women’s programme to succeed, the foundation must be strong and Guyana must be seen as the cradle for its development, while the North American players would complement the existing structure and boost its development.
The GFF-WCC also mentioned in their release that Mark Rodrigues, a Canada-based Guyanese, has already indicated his willingness to function as Technical Director.
The release also stated that Caribbean Football Union (CFU) and CONCACAF Referee Ferriera James and Assistant Referee Cynette Jeffers can contribute greatly to the developmental process.
The GFF-WCC was set up late last year with its main objective of aiding in the financial aspects of pushing the national team, the Golden Jaguars, towards participation in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
The GFF-WCC is still asking corporate Guyana to support their efforts and is reminding the public that Guyana’s first qualifying game against Suriname is just about two months away.
