The Ministry of Labour has filed charges alleging offences committed by Dr. Neville Gobin, Managing Director of Woodlands Hospital Ltd at 110-111 Carmichael Street, Georgetown.
According to a press release from the ministry one of the alleged offences is the managing director’s failure to consult with the Chief Labour Officer (CLO) as required by Section 12 (3) of the Termination of Employment and Severance Pay Act No. 19 of 1997 on possible measures that could have been taken to avert the ceasing of operations within the laundry department on March 31, 2008.
Dr Gobin is also charged with failure to recognize the Guyana Labour Union, a duly registered trade union under the provision of the Trade Union Act, Chapter 98:03, in that the Trade Union Recognition & Certification Board, a body corporate established under the Trade Union Act No. 33 of 1977, had certified the union to be the recognized majority union for porters, security officers, nurses and nurse aids employed by the hospital.
The release said further that after a meeting with the GLU and Woodlands Hospital at the Ministry of Labour on February 4, 2008, the company agreed to recognize the union but failed to do so.
Dr Gobin is scheduled to appear in court on April 18, the release signed by the Chief Occupational Safety and Health Officer, Mohamed Akeel said.
