Dear Editor,
I have noticed how quickly the massacres at Lusignan and Bartica have dropped out of the news. Is anyone following up with the surviving victims, orphans, widows and other relatives of those murdered?
In the beginning there was a lot of talk of helping the survivors. What kind of help was given to these people? Also, what is the status of the street lights, fence building, bush-clearing and other measures promised to prevent further attacks on these villagers?
I noticed recently the Venezuelan embassy donated money to the farmers from Buxton who were displaced as a result of the bush-clearing aback that village. I would like to know if that embassy, or any other, has given similar assistance to the residents of Lusignan and Bartica, in an effort to help them deal with the aftermath of the slaughter they endured.
Yours faithfully,
Mohan Singh
Editor’s note:
A follow-up was done on Lusignan in the March 31 edition of Stabroek News and we intend to do a similar news item on Bartica. The massacres and the trauma they wrought are mentioned frequently in articles referring to the crime situation.
