Carlton Anthony of Alness Village, Corentyne, won the first ever Charles and Ada Gordon Memorial Road race organized by the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTYSC) last Sunday.

Anthony completed the two-mile event which started in front of the Albion Police Station with 27 runners  facing the starter and finished at the Rose Hall Town arch in a time of 9:46, to take home the first prize of $50,000 and a medal that was sponsored by overseas-based Guyanese Martin Cort in honour of his late grandparents.
He was locked in a tight battle with Clifford Stevens who is a member of the athletics section of RHTYSC and had to settle for the runner-up position for which he received $20,000 and a medal, but broke away from him with just over 100 metres to go to the finish.

Oswald Garnett came in a distant third  and received $10,000 for his efforts.  The first female to cross the finish line was Ashitz Scott of New Amsterdam and she won for herself, $10,000 while  Yonette Fraser at 58-years-old was the oldest athlete to complete the event and 9-year-old Joel Pike also of RHTYSC athletics division was the youngest. They both received $5,000 each.

In a brief statement, secretary of RHTYSC Hilbert Foster told those gathered that the club would be placing a lot of attention on athletics in 2008. He also took the opportunity to thank Martin Cort for sponsoring the event along with the Guyana Police Force and DDL for the assistance rendered during the course of the race. Allan Cort, son of Charles and Ada Cort, started the event.
