A fighting innings from the veteran Neil Barry enabled Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) to defeat East Coast in the Demerara zone final of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)/ Carib Beer/ Pepsi sponsored national first division Twenty20 competition yesterday.
Barry rolled back the years by showing his younger teammates how to destroy a bowling attack when he struck 22 runs from the bowling of national off spinner Zaheer Mohammed’s final over in scoring an unbeaten 40 (3x4s; 2x6s) as MSC scored 139-7 from their 20 overs to which East Coast was held to 113-9 from their 20 overs.
He received admirable support from Orin Forde and Dion Ferrier who both scored 25. Vidash Lall with 2-29 led the bowling for East Coast who in reply were held to 113-9 from their 20 overs.
Only Sultan Safdar with 42 (5x4s; 1×6) and Mohammed 18 (2x6s) were able to counter the spin attack thrown to them by the city side.
Damian Vantull (3-20) and Ferrier (2-17) were the principal wicket takers for MSC who will now face Rose Hall Town Windies Sports Bar in the national semi final next Wednesday.
