For a show that was sold out and televised live across the country the Guyana Model Search sure did live up to expectations but there was one small problem. Why was it so short?
Maybe that is how it is with such shows — those that haul you in from the first minute and keep you glued right through even during a break. It certainly was one interesting and exciting night on Sunday when Guyana’s top male and female models were named.
From an onstage collapse following the key announcements to an overdramatic winning celebration to wardrobe malfunctions on the runway and a brawl in the audience that almost was, Model Search had it all. What made it even more interesting was the fact the cameras were rolling all night.
And no you did not hear it incorrectly the top models are Michael Younge and Shenelly Kendall. There is a definitely a buzz about who was slighted and who came out of nowhere and stole the show and who should have won and all that, but what else can you expect when there were so many front-runners?
Based on how people reacted after the curtains went down on ‘Glamorous’ at Le Meridien Pegasus it appeared that from the very onset, models Dillon Braford and Jenel Cox’s names were inked on paper. It was also the buzz around the town that they were shoo-ins and that any other result would be unacceptable.
But Bradford and Cox fell short in the end both taking the third positions overall in their respective categories. He was gracious in defeat while she was obviously stunned but she was also hurt and after the tears came she collapsed.
Before things got dramatic, Model Search was moving along quite well. The cute little fashions were flooding the stage and the models were working the runaway; then the wardrobe malfunctions started popping up one after the other. There were two particular lines that together spelt ‘delicious and saucy’ and the audience had quite a visual feast.
Of the finalists that were working the runway that night Kendall seemed to be making all the right moves and she looked hot too. There was something about her, maybe it was the playful smile or the well-toned skin but she just stood out and apparently she had it from the day she first auditioned for Model Search. Her competition was equally appealing.
Ayanna Harris and Jenel Cox were the stage beauties who got the loud cheers and instant approvals when they took the stage but something was missing; that spark that lit up Kendall’s face all night.
In the race for the male model Bradford seemed to have been doing everything right and he looked good while doing it. There was hardly a woman there that could have resisted those eyes and the same could be said for Anthony Snow. But it was Younge who had consistently been performing well in the competition who pulled if off in the end. He did nothing wrong on the night, well maybe except, behave over-the-top after being named the winner.
And even before the claws came out when the announcements were made some patrons were clashing over seats and in one case, threatening to take the dispute “outside”. In the end it was resolved but it revealed an age old issue that plagues fashion shows all the time – organisers sell more tickets than they have seats for. (thescene@stabroeknews.com)
