The Commonwealth Association of Museums (CAM) and the Culture ministry are hosting a five-day conference from Friday aimed at introducing new methods of preserving exhibits and bolstering museums’ roles as learning institutions.
According to a press release the symposium will be convened under two heads: Museums in Pluralistic Societies and World-Watch One. “Biodiversity and Conservation, the intensive encounter has a central theme of “Museums in Diversity.”” The release said the meeting was open to all established members of the museum community worldwide as well as CAM members, associates and partners.
Vice Chancellor Emeritus at the University of the West Indies, Dr Rex Nettleford will be the keynote speaker at Friday’s function which will be hosted at the Umana Yana.
The first part of the seminar deals with the issues and challenges of museums in civil societies among others. The agenda for the second session is intended to be the first of a series dealing with human and natural environment of museums with a global perspective.
Administrator of the National Museum Tamika Boatswain said the conference is bound “to introduce new perspectives to the local museum community…new approaches to designing and preserving exhibits, the concept of a museum as a formal institution of learning and the inclusiveness of all cultures will be explored. Local participants will include museums, heritage societies, the University of Guyana, archives and zoos. President Bharrat Jagdeo and Culture minister Dr Frank Anthony are expected to attend the official opening.
