Dear Editor,
Congratulations are in order to Ms Carolyn Rodrigues on her preferment to the important Cabinet Post of Minister of Foreign Affairs. Her appointment is historic in many ways, and I wish her well.
Unhappily, it appears that her first step seems to be an awkward one. She has already faltered, with the Head of the Presidential Secretariat appearing to have a different view on the question of the Venezuelans donating food to Buxton.
A Foreign Affairs Minister must be intelligent, astute and most of all, knowledgeable. I hope she stumbles no more and can live up to what is expected of the Minister that represents all of Guyana in all foreign countries.
Further, I hope that she prevails on her Government that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs should now be taken seriously and ensure there is some restructuring. Her predecessor was unable to effectuate this, in spite of his best efforts.
Rudy Insanally is a fine man, patriot par excellence, a person of integrity and lofty moral principles with a passion to serve this country and to burnish our image overseas.
Occasionally I travel and the truth is, many of our embassies are poorly staffed and in need of enhancement, perhaps still suffering from the onslaught of an early administration.
The new Minister has a list of illustrious and competent ministers to follow, the likes of Sir Shridath ‘Sonny’ Ramphal, Fred Wills, Rashleigh Jackson and Rudy Insanally. Let us hope she can tread gallantly their footprints.
Let us as a nation offer a prayer for her well being and success. Again I wish her well.
Yours faithfully,
Hamilton Green, JP
