Dear Editor,
Congrats to the WI in wrapping up the one-day series against the Sri Lankans with a match to spare. Chanderpaul’s brilliance was once again evident as he was well supported by Samuels’ timely knock.
With reference to Artist Allim’s question if Chanderpaul’s “six to win off the last ball is unprecedented”, there have been three instances in one-day international cricket where a six has been hit off the final ball to seal matches.
The first being Javed Miandad against arch rivals India in 1986, The Australasia Cup final, Sharjah when he hit Chetan Sharma for six, when four was needed. Lance Klusener did it to New Zealand in Napier,1998-99 when he hit Dion Nash for maximum when four was required. Brendan Taylor of Zimbabwe did it against fellow minnows Bangladesh in Harare, 2006 when he hit Mashrafe Mottaza over midwicket for six when five was needed.
Asif Mujtaba of Pakistan famously hit Steve Waugh last ball for six in Hobart, Australia,1992-93 to tie the match. Then there is also the case when Greg Chappell controversially instructed his brother Trevor Chappell to bowl the final ball of the innings underarm to prevent New Zealand no.11 Brian McKenchie hitting him for six in the biggest ground in the world, Melbourne in 1980.
Yours faithfully,
Ravin Shivnauth
