– court hears
A 37-year-old man who stole a gear box worth $10,000 told the court yesterday he was homeless and was subsequently remanded to prison.
Nazir Rahim of 14 Riverview Ruimvelt pleaded guilty to the charge of simple larceny when it was read to him by Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.
Between April 8 and 11 Rahim stole a gear box, property of Aubrey Taylor, and he later told the court that he sold it to a scrap iron dealer for $340.
When asked by the court where he lived Rahim at first said that he was homeless. However, when magistrate Robertson-Ogle asked if he would like her to find him a place of abode he quickly supplied an address explaining that it was his mother’s place but he only slept there at nights.
Rahim was given the choice between the minimum fine of $25,000 and a sentence of 18 months. Failing to produce the cash the defendant was remanded.
