Magistrate Tejnarine Ramroop ordered that a teenager, charged with attempted murder and robbery with aggravation, be placed in custody at the Blairmont Police Station when he appeared before him at the Blairmont Court on Monday.
It is alleged that on March 27 at Woodley Park, West Coast Berbice the 14-year-old together with an adult, Keshan Evans who is still on the run, unlawfully and maliciously wounded Chandrawattie “Dolly” Ramsaroop with intent to commit murder.
The court heard too that on the same day at Woodley Park, being in company with another, the teen robbed Ramsarran of $7,900, three gold rings valued $100,000 and a diamond ring worth $40,000, a total value of $147,900, and immediately before or after used personal violence on the woman.
Police prosecutor Donna Grant-Fraser submitted that bail should be refused because of the gravity of the offence and as the victim who is still hospitalized is said to be in a serious condition.
In his application for bail, attorney-at-law Joel Edmond submitted that bail should be considered since the incident is a mere allegation and there is a presumption of innocence.
He argued that “one man is on the run” and wondered why his client, who attends a private school, should suffer and be deprived of an education.
Further, the lawyer said, “Charges alone do not amount to a conviction and if they [prosecution] go to preliminary inquiry they must establish that a prima facie case has been made out. If they go to trial his guilt has to be ascertained and then he can be punished.”
The lawyer objected when the prosecutor stated that she had made contact with the hospital to uplift a medical report and said that a progress report should have been available if the police had requested it.
In his submissions, Edmond also related that his client and the other man were in the backdam picking mangoes when Ramsarran rushed up to them saying that the mangoes belonged to her.
The woman fired a cutlass at them and Evans snatched it and dealt her the chops, he said.
The lawyer said his client ran away while this was happening but was later held by the police.
