Cornelia Ida were crowned limited overs champions when they defeated Rangers in the final of the Barakat Brothers limited overs cricket competition at the Meet-en-Meer-Zorg ground recently.
Cornelia Ida defeated Leguan in one of the semi-finals while Rangers got past Crane in the other semi-final.
Former national middle-order batsman Rabindranauth Seeram was adjudged man-of-the-match after grabbing two wickets and backing that up with a solid innings of 49.
Rangers won the toss and elected to bat first but were bundled out for 164 in 35 of the allotted 40 overs.
Left-arm orthodox leg-spinner, Shawn Jairaj and off- spinner, Nigel Vivera, each grabbed three wickets for 54 and 30 runs respectively while Seeram chipped in with 2–20.
Rangers were led by a fighting half-century from opener Rovindra Sewnarine, whose innings included six fours and two sixes. Rajin Rahaman supported with three fours and a six in his innings of 24.
A large turn out which included Essequibo Cricket Board (ECB) president, Alvin Johnson, Region Number Three Vice-Chairman, Nand Persaud and Tuschen/ Uitvlugt Neighbourhood Democratic Councillor Jassoda Ramdass.
In reply, Cornelia Ida reached 165 – 5 with just four deliveries remaining.
Seeram top scored with 49 hitting six fours while Ameer Khan chipped in with 32.
Bisram Thomas and Vivera finished unbeaten on 31 and 13 respectively.
Sannath Latchana bagged 2 – 28 to be the most successful bowler for Rangers.
Cornelia Ida received $50,000 for the win while the Rangers received G$25, 000.
Seeram received $10,000 and a trophy from Sophie Barakat for being the man-of-the-match.
Other incentives and trophies went to Safraz Karim for being the highest scorer in the competition and Brian Hubert for capturing the most wickets.
Five special trophies were presented to the team with the highest score (Rangers – 288), the best bowling figures (Hubert – (7-16)), the most disciplined team (Shamrock Sports Club), the first ton of the competition (Aleem Khan) and to Meten-Meer-Zorg Sports Club for hosting the semi-finals and finals.
