Alpha United and Pele Football Club bulldozed their way to victories in matches of the Guyana Football Federation’s (GFA) Guyana Telephone and Telegraphy (GT&T) Cellink Plus Premier League first division competition at the Tucville Playfield Friday night.
Alpha United defeated Georgetown Football Club (GFC) 3-0 while Pele inflicted a 4 – 0 whipping on Uprising.
The matches followed the traditional march-past and the kick off by GT&T Marketing Director Wystan Roberston.
The curtain raiser got underway at 6pm with Alpha United, coming off a Mayor’s Cup title triumph, beginning the job of demolishing GFC’s defence.
It was not long before Vellon Throne found an opening and went through scoring the first goal of the match and tournament in the 17th minute to give Alpha United the upper hand.
Soon after, Andrew Murray found the back of the net in the 20th minute as the tournament’s juggernaut extended their lead to 2 – 0.
Eight minutes later, Andrew St. Hill, delivered the final blow which completely blanked out GFC’s hopes of victory with a 28th minute goal.
The second half was contrary to the first as it was completely goalless for both teams.
It was a nightmare for Uprising as they shrivelled to a 4 – 0 defeat. To tell a story, one would say ‘it all began’ when Travis Grant slipped one past the goal-keeper in the 15th minute to register Pele’s first goal.
The nightmare got worse when Rawle Harding and Okene Fraser marked their names on the card in the 22nd and 35th minutes respectively, taking the score to 3 – 0 at half time.
When Uprising may have been thinking their troubles could not get any worse, Dirk Archer stuffed one in five minutes before regulation time, scoring the only goal of the second half.
The competition continues this evening with Sunburst Camptown FC going up against Santos FC at 6pm while 2007 GT&T Premier League runners up Fruta Conquerors will try to penetrate the Guyana Defence Force’s defence at 8pm.
