The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) says it has been following closely the situation as it unfolds between the Palestinians and Israelis and it deplores the continued “vicious and murderous attacks on the Palestinian people by the Israeli military.”
In a press release the party said every day many civilians including innocent children are being killed indiscriminately by soldiers firing rockets from aircrafts and helicopters. “Israel has turned the Gaza Strip into a huge prison, with deteriorating conditions,” the party said, adding that their actions have destroyed electricity and sewerage systems which have compounded the misery of the Palestinians.
The party said too it salutes the work of former US President Jimmy Carter “whose great humanitarian concerns have led him to speak out against the apartheid system that Israel has imposed” on the Palestinians. The party said it also notes the “double standards” of many western governments in talking about democracy yet they have encouraged the destruction of the democratically elected government in Palestine.
The PPP calls on the international community, in particular the US and European Union, “the main financiers of Israel, to use their considerable influence to demand that Israel respects the human rights of the Palestinian people and work towards the establishment of a viable Palestinian state.”
