Bhojnarine Persaud was adjudged the best lifter when the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) held its Novices Championships recently at the Rosignol Primary School, West Coast Berbice.
The championships, which provided a platform for the first timers to showcase their talent, saw Persaud winning the 132-lb category from Wazeem Immamdeen.
Persaud, who set a new squat record of 435 ¼ pounds, ended with a total of 1074 ¼ pounds to defeat Immamdeen who ended with 1031 ¾ pounds.
Immamadeen was also in a record breaking mood and his 473 pounds was a new deadlift record in the 132-pound category.
In the 114-lb category, Vejai Rahim shattered two records on the way to winning the event with a total of 837 pounds. He set a new squat record of 319 ½ pounds and a new deadlift record of 363 ¼ pounds.
In the 148 pounds category, Kelvin Lawrence, who won the category with a total of 1095 ½ pounds, set a new squat record of 418 pounds while Anis Ade-Thomas set an astonishing deadlift record of 562 pounds in the 181-pound category to win with a total of 1223 pounds.
Albert Osbourne was the runner-up to Lawrence with a total of 928 pounds.
Julio Sinclair captured the 242-pound category with a total of 1273 pounds while Nigel Phillips with a total of 1124 pounds was runner up to Ade-Thomas.
In the 276-pound category Salim Latiff, the lone competitor, set a new squat record of 507 pounds on the way to a total of 1169 ¼ pounds.
