The Guyana men’s rugby team reached the semi-finals of the North American West Indies Rugby Association (NAWIRA) Rugby World Cup qualifiers in the Cayman Islands with a 10-3 victory over Jamaica on Sunday.
Trinidad and Tobago also booked their place in the final four when they defeated Grand Cayman 37-7 while Bermuda overcame Bahamas 29-20 in a closely fought encounter and Barbados narrowly defeated Mexico 21-20.
Guyana will now face Bermuda and Trinidad will take on Barbados in the semi-finals that are billed to kick off tomorrow, with the winners meeting in the final of the Cup competition which will be played on Saturday 26. The winner of the Cup will go on to contest the winner of the CONSOR B group South American qualifying tournament.
According to a press release, the Guyana/Jamaica game featured evenly matched forwards but it was the superior defence of the Guyanese which included four of the West Indies sevens players, that stood out in the game as they used their speed and fierce defence to overcome a tough Jamaican team.
By virtue of the loss they suffered in their quarterfinal matches, Cayman Islands will take on Jamaica and Bahamas will go up against Mexico in the Plate competition.
The Cup, Plate and Shield finals will all be contested on Sunday.
