Scotsburg United proved why they are the softball champions of Berbice when they turned back the challenge of Floodlights XI in their Bier Singh Memorial 25 overs clash on Sunday at the Crabwood Creek ground.
After they had won the toss and opted to take first strike in soggy conditions caused by early morning rain, Floodlights XI were bowled out for 150 with Samuel Kingston leading the way with 30 (3x6s). K. Hashin (19 (2x6s) and S. Mangal 16 (2x6s) offered support to Kingston as Tyrone Sanassie who took 4-19 and Troy Kippins 3-33 looked set to destroy the batting of the visiting team.
In reply, Scotsburg, led by a swashbuckling 39 from Sherwin Murray, who also took 2-36 with the ball and was given two lives by Mike Singh before he had opened his account, struck four sixes and two fours during his stay at the wicket.
Michael Rangasami with 21 (1×6;1×4) and Kippins 16 (2x6s) completed the victory for Scotsburg, with Kippins, who was later adjudged Man of the Match, hitting the winning run, a huge six over long off to complete the win. M. Bharat with 2-11 and P. Khan 2-31 were the principal wicket takers for Floodlights XI.
Earlier, a Vishnu General Store Select XI defeated a 4R Bearing Select Squad by 8 runs in the first match of the day.
During the presentation ceremony that followed which saw individual trophies being presented to persons for their exemplary performances during the day, Ricky Deonarine on behalf of 4R Bearings and Floodlights XI donated $200,000.00 to the construction of the Crabwood Creek Sanatan Mandir.
