A 35-year-old farmer accused of having cocaine and ganja in his possession for trafficking was remanded to prison when he appeared at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Olsen London called ‘Doc’ of Lot 732 Tuschen New Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo pleaded not guilty to two charges of possession of and trafficking in narcotics and was remanded to prison by Magistrate Fazil Azeez.
It is alleged that last Saturday at Tuschen, he had in his possession 15 grammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. It is also alleged that he had nine grammes of ganja in his possession. Reports are that acting on information received, police went to the Tuschen Housing Scheme and when London saw them, he reportedly walked away. He was pursued by the ranks and was allegedly seen throwing away a plastic bag. The police retrieved the bag and reportedly discovered the items inside and arrested London.
Attorney-at-law Lyndon Amsterdam entered an appearance for London. In his submissions, he said nothing was found on his client. In a bail application, he said that his client was a father of five, a poultry farmer and the only breadwinner for his family.
In opposing bail, Police Prosecutor Ramsahoye Rambajue said the defendant was already before the court on a similar charge for which he was placed on bail and was absent on a few occasions. He submitted that if bail was granted, there was a likelihood of London fleeing the jurisdiction.
After listening to the submissions, the magistrate granted bail in the sum of $25,000 on the possession of cannabis charge and remanded him on the other charge. He will return to court on May 20 at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.
