he Pepsi Sonics Basketball Club will be staging its annual 7-a-side knockout invitational basketball tournament on May 3rd and 4th at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall beginning at 1pm each day.
According to a press release, the competition will be launched under the theme, ‘Experience, Discover, Live’ and plans to feature teams from the West and East Bank of Demerara, East Coast of Demerara and Georgetown.
Teams will be competing for the first place prize of $40,000, second place prize of $30,000, third place prize of $20,000 and fourth place prize of $10,000.
There will also be a prize awarded for the tournament’s ‘Most Valuable Player’.
Each game will take the format of two ten-minute halves, with the exception of the finals which will have two 15-minute halves.
According to the treasurer of the Pepsi Sonics Basketball Club, Hollisworth Casey, the competition is aimed at giving the country’s top junior players an opportunity to compete at a high level.
Each participating team will be required to pay a registration fee of $3,500, and to complete registration on or before the opening day of the competition.
The release also stated that the New York Rocker and Georgetown Pioneers will go head to head in an exhibition game during the weekend.
